Art&Science: observation, abstraction and creativity at the service of knowledge

1.2 Description

The CEIP FRAY JUAN DE LA CRUZ of SEGOVIA has created the GALERÍA DE ARTE ANEJA in the central hall of the school. In it different local artists are exhibiting, for the moment, who get all the benefits of any conventional gallery: an exhibition space open to the public during school days, an exhibition catalogue and dissemination through social networks and media Segovia. In exchange, the artists experiment with the school students, developing a series of interactive workshops with different age groups, in which the students try to emulate their own creative processes using, first of all, pigments and primitive techniques, then other materials and techniques from all periods, and finally ending in the use of new technologies.

With the project we try, in principle, to BRING ART TO THE NEAREST ENVIRONMENT OF THE STUDENTS (the Museum comes to school and not the other way around); secondly, we try to GIVE MORE RELEVANCE TO ARTISTIC EDUCATION, devalued in the last curricular proposals of our laws and educational administrations; we also emphasize the POTENTIATION OF THE EXPERIMENTATION, OBSERVATION, ABSTRACTION AND CREATIVITY IN OUR STUDENTS, all of them ends and signs of identity of our educational project; in addition, WE CONVERT THE COLLEGE IN THE CENTRE OF CULTURAL IRRADIATION INSIDE THE DISTRICT, involving our closest surroundings, educational community, City council, artists, associations and mass media.

However, the ultimate goal we pursue is the SIGNIFICATION OF THE EXISTING CONNECTIONS BETWEEN ART AND SCIENCE, delving into how both complement and interconnect and concluding in the incomprehensible division of knowledge in primary school. Both ART and SCIENCE explore phenomena and lived experiences to try to understand reality and the potentialities that may exist under it. To do this, both apply intuition, discipline, logic and inspiration to understand what surrounds us. Artists and scientists use experimentation, observation, abstraction, analysis, discovery, creativity, as instruments and work procedures. The artist Luke Jerram, for example, stated: "scientists and artists begin to ask similar questions about the natural world, ending up with completely different answers" (Boustead, 2009).

Finally, we have to get students to PRODUCE SCIENCE through ART and create ART through SCIENCE, through all the processes of creation and experimentation of different materials and techniques up to the use of computers.

In the process we must be able to IMPLICATE THE INSTITUTIONS OF OUR ENVIRONMENT, TO THE DISTRICT AND TO ALL THE ANEJA EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY.

ANEJA Art&Science Gallery - Segovia OPEN SCHOOL

1.2.1. Creator of this activity.

The activity has been designed by the faculty of the CEIP FRAY JUAN DE LA CRUZ (ESCUELA ANEJA) of SEGOVIA, being at the head of the initiative JOSÉ MIGUEL ALONSO FUENTE ([email protected]), as TUTOR OF FIFTH PRIMARY COURSE and ICT COORDINATOR of this educational centre, which is located in the heart of the old town, next to the wall of the city of Segovia, in Taray street, nº 2, CP 40001 SEGOVIA. The centre has always been linked to the University of Valladolid, being its PUBLIC SCHOOL OF PRACTICE for many years, and always maintaining an interest in innovation and educational experimentation. The e-mail address of this public school, which belongs to the Junta de Castilla y León, is [email protected].

1.2.2. Planned collaboration with enviromental agents

Agent 1: SEGOVIA TOWN COUNCIL

We maintain a fluid and constant relationship. In this case, we count on the collaboration of both the ADVISORY OF EDUCATION and the ADVISORY OF CULTURE. The project joins another existing project for the transformation of the walls, courtyards and boundary fences of the school through artistic manifestations of our students and the educational community in general.

Agent 2: THE ANEJA EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY

We are in a center in which the educational community participates actively and in a coordinated way in the educational tasks. In this case, he has shown even more interest, since the project wants it to be part of another initiative of the school's AMPA for the transformation of the school yards through art, called LIVING PATIO.

Agent 3: THE UNIVERSITY AND THE MUSEUMS OF SEGOVIA.

We also have the collaboration of the University of Valladolid and specifically the Department of Plastic Education of the Faculty of Education, as well as different museums in Segovia, Specifically, we want to get the Center for Innovation and Development for Design and Culture in Segovia, very close to the center and linked to our educational project, dedicate some space to this experience in cultural planning and exhibition next year.

Agent 4: COMMERCIES AND COMPANIES OF THE DISTRICT AND SEGOVIAN.

We need to count on the associations and company of the environment to carry out experiments and research in terms of materials and techniques.

Agent 5: OLD PROFESSOR AND STUDENT

We have retired former teachers who collaborate closely in the development of our educational project. We also maintain contact with former students who are currently developing referenced tasks and professions. Due to tradition and background, we have the involvement of many artists related to the school, in one way or another.

Agent 6: COMMUNICATION MEDIA

We also maintain a very direct relationship and we involve them in our educational plans. They are necessary in the diffusion and massive scope of the project.

1.2.3. Other suggestions

The experience has been very well received and at this moment we have a waiting list for exhibitions in our ANEJA ART GALLERY.
We have a provisional website where you can check the pilot experiences, until the project itself is undertaken:

Objective 1: To investigate the connections between ART and SCIENCE.
Objective 2: To experiment with different techniques and materials, from the origins of art (elaborating primitive pigments) to new artistic manifestations, using the newest technologies.
Objective 3: To involve all the agents of our environment, carrying out artistic manifestations in the centre and its surroundings, which deepen a significant transformation of the image and functionality of our school and its facilities, based on the conclusions of the connection between ART and SCIENCE.
Objective 4: To generate multimedia documents that allow the experience to be communicated, disseminated, valued and extrapolated.
Objective 4: To interact among all members of the educational community, contributing to the generation of critical thinking regarding educational processes, within the budgets of an open, innovative and creative school.
