“Debate Competition” is a competition between 11 year old students, who debate on issues related to scientific issues that influence our everyday life. Through the activity students learn to form solid arguments and take position, as well as they familiarize themselves with exposure to audience.

The Debate Competition however is not only about cultivating communication skills and about the Competition itself. It is an extended educational activity in the framework of which students:

  • are involved with scientific investigations
  • are familiarized with scientific issues, issues of ethics, law, politics and science
  • cooperate with their classmates, share information and ideas
  • take up different roles (debater, judge)
  • take a position on issues that influence our lives
  • take action in the school and local community

The activity was enthusiastically embraced from teachers and students and was evolved from within.

Learning Objectives

Through this activity, students are expected to:

  • cultivate their communication skills, by analyzing and composing views and arguments, conversing, disagreeing and resolving conflicts

  • learn to collaborate, working in groups, sharing information and ideas
  • cultivate scientific thinking but also scientific research and study skills by being involved in scientific research on the issues they are required to debate about
  • acquire knowledge and skills related to scientific issues, by being involved in investigations related to the way science influences the quality of everyday life
  • be prepared their dynamic inclusion in school life and later in adult society as responsible citizens, by taking a position on such kind of issues and by proposing their ideas and taking action to the school and local community

Available Partnership Opportunities

The “Debate Contest” activity is organized in collaboration with the Greek Institute of Educational Policy (The educational activity is under the aegis of the Greek Ministry of Education), the School Regional Administration Office, the School Advisor of East Attica, and the University of Athens. We have already started cooperation with other eight interested schools within our Region.

Responsible Research and Innovation

Governance

Students will be in charge of finding and getting in touch with different stakeholders, who will be involved in the different phases of the activity. Students and stakeholders will make responsible decisions collectively.

i.e.: Depending on the topic that you want to raise in the project, students will be responsible for finding and involving different stakeholders, experts in the field with which they will share the progress in order to make decisions that may affect the results of the project.

Public engagement

A very important part of this activity is the interaction of the stakeholders, who will be found by students according to the topics contemplated in the Accelerator. Students will be able to establish new relationships with stakeholders and encourage them to collaborate with each other in order to discuss issues related to the project.

i.e.: to develop this activity, students must create new relationships with expert stakeholders in the topics that they wish to contemplate. For this, they will be able to interview them periodically, with the aim of involving them in the research and innovation phases.

Gender equality

Students will be able to consider the gender dimension throughout the activity, and work to break social stereotypes on gender issues.

i.e.: the debates that take place must have a vision of gender equality, in which the opinions of both men and women matter. Students may also involve the same number of male and female stakeholders, with the aim of looking for a gender equal vision of the debates.

Science Education

Students will encourage discussions to address the solutions with a critical perspective. Furthermore, students can also share the responsibility for formulating scientific policies, depending on the topic covered in the debates and the conclusions drawn.

i.e.: when discussing during this Accelerator, students can choose topics that foster critical thinking around the world of science and that enable citizens to discuss around policies and, if possible, generate new ones.

Ethics

Students can reflect on the opinions expressed by the stakeholders involved in the activity as well as by society in general, sharing responsibility for the conclusions drawn with them.

i.e.: When preparing a debate, students will be able to reflect on all the opinions generated around the topic or topics discussed. In addition, they may be responsible for drawing conclusions that reflect the ideas and conceptions of the stakeholders involved, including those of the experts and those of society in general (through neighbors, relatives, etc.).

Open Access

Students will be able to consult peer-reviewed literature, dissemination publications and data around the chosen topics. All this information will allow you to delve more deeply into the issues to be discussed in the debates.

i.e.: once a topic of debate has been chosen, in order to prepare it, students will be able to consult different sources of online information that will allow them to extract opinions formed on the issues to be worked on. In addition, their conclusions may also be published on social networks and / or websites to disseminate and share it with the interested public.

Resources needed

No special equipment is required.
