An excellent workshop on "Schools study earthquakes" was held at Vrilissia Cultural Center in the presence of Deputy Minister of Education Mrs. Sofia Zacharakis, Dr. Gerasimos Chouliaras, Research Director of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens and Dr. Sofoklis Sotiriou, Head of Research and Development Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi.
The Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, in collaboration with the Research and Development Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi, has developed and coordinated a European collaboration through which school seismographs operate in educational networks. Today the network comprises 61 school seismographs covering the entire highly earthquake-prone area of the Eastern Mediterranean and operates in a total of 5 countries (Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Turkey, Bulgaria). The 1st High School of Vrilissia is one of the schools participating in the program, in order to increase students' interest in science and how it affects their daily lives and to create incentives for teachers to adopt innovative methods of support and the renewal of science.
In her address, Deputy Minister of Education Mrs. Zacharakis said that "we support the initiatives that open the school to the world and to the rapidly changing data".
