The Idea

The Greek contribution to the first Global Science Opera was built around the concept of promoting the inclusion of remote educational communities, the composition of original music and the participation of both teachers and pupils at the performance. The Greek skyscene video-participation was composed and produced by Petros Stergiopoulos on behalf of Ellinogermaniki Agogi and the Global Science Opera in real time community of remote schools.

The Libretto

Joao discusses with his father about various cultures and ages’ concept of matter. He is excited about the story of W. Pauli, who imagined the existence of a particle, leading to an exploration spanning decades. Joao wants to discover a particle, but is rejected, and told that it would take many years before that would be possible. Desperate to realize his dream, he invites his friends from around the globe to help him. Together, they study the Ghost Particles photons, neutrinos, and Higgs Boson, and finally, they consider a way of discovering the particle. They seek the help of the CMS experiment in order to describe it, and then send a message to the world, inspired by Pauli’s “radioactive” speech: “Dear Creative Ladies and Gentlemen….”Firefly tells about our understanding of the Neutrino today. Joao is working on how to discover a new particle.

The Scene

In the 5th scene of the 2nd Act, Firefly tells about our understanding of the Neutrino today. Joao is working on how to discover a new particle.

The Remote Schools in Continental Greece, Macedonia, the Ionian and Aegean seas...

The schools participated in the Greek scene were from Distomo in Continental Greece, Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, Special Junior High School of Thessaloniki and primary schools from Milos and Chios in the Aegean sea.

Primary school pupils and lower secondary school students from Thessaloniki all the islands mentioned above, took part in numerous school activities related to the subject.

Zakynthos

A remix with the pupils voice related to Greek Mythology was produced:

The Protagonists

The Greek scene for the "Ghost Particles" Opera was performed by students:

Joao: Antonis Kontopoulos
Father: Stella Antonogiannaki
Firefly: Francesca Fragkiadou

and Pupils from Primary schools in Milos, Zakynthos, Distomo and Chios.

Composing Original Music

The music score for the "Towards a new particle" was originaly composed for full String Orchestra, Mezzo Soprano Voice and Percussion.

The scores...

For the purposes of the scene, soprano voice, guitar and voice ornaments were digitally recorded and edited in a Digital Audio Workstation environment. Recordings were finally mixed with the original soundtrack.

You can listen to the audio soundtrack here:

The Human Voice | the echo voice | the guitar chord | the digital paintings

The human voice and the ornaments were put as enhancements of the soprano voice (performed by Stella Antonogiannaki). A chord was performed from both a classic and an electric guitar ( Stella Antonogiannaki and Antonis Kontopoulos).  The line of the soprano voice was performed by Dr. Katerina Bulakou.

The dialogue - rational

Developing the idea
Students were introduced on the summary of the Opera and the scientific background. Science teachers asked students to develop brainstorming ideas. Students compiled a number of suggestions and received feedback from their teachers.

Writing the script of the scene
Students developed the final sequence of shots and the dialogues. The first dialogue was between Joao and his Father and the second between Joan and the Firefly.

The first dialogue / Ο πρώτος διάλογος
English Ελληνικά

J: Dad, I read in the encyclopedia that light is wave!

D: No Joao, If you had read more carefully, you would have learned that light is particle. A particle named photon.

J: How do you know this?

D: What do you mean Joao? That is basic physics

J: But I am telling you, I read in the encyclopedia that light is electromagnetic wave

D: Yes, but Einstein explained photoelectric effect based on the assumption that light is particle, in fact he won the Nobel prize for this.

J: Yes, but before that Maxwell formulated not one but four equations, in which he described  light as an electromagnetic wave.

D: Joao, my son, light interacts with matter like a particle does. If it was a wave it could not do this.

J: In school, in an experiment we conducted, using lenses and slits, our teacher proved that light propagates like a wave, the same way sound does.

D: Maybe you are right my son. Maybe both explanations about light are true. It seems that both Einstein and Maxwell as well as me and you are right about light .

J: Yes Dad, you are right. Physics is a great game!

J: Μπαμπά, διάβασα στην εγκυκλοπαίδεια ότι το φως είναι κύμα!

Π: Όχι J, αν διάβαζες πιο προσεκτικά θα μάθαινες ότι είναι σωματίδιο και, μάλιστα, λέγεται φωτόνιο.

J: Και συ πού το ξέρεις;

The second dialogue / Ο δεύτερος διάλογος
English Ελληνικά

J: I want to discover a new particle

Firefly: Then you will have to learn things about particles that have already been discovered.

J: For example?

F: For example the neutrinos

J: What are the neutrinos Firefly?

F: The neutrinos are small particles, with minimum mass, electrically neutral, that pass through normal matter and move almost as fast as the light.

J: Since they pass through normal matter, how do we trace them?

F: It is very unlikely for neutrinos to react with matter, because they are electrically neutral. Imagine that right now billions of neutrinos pass through you body. In order to trace them, we have constructed big balls on ice or very clean water.

J: And how to neutrinos trace those balls?

F: When neutrinos react, electrons that move faster than light in the water glow a blue light that is called Cherenkov radiation.

J: Wow!

J: Θέλω να ανακαλύψω ένα καινούργιο σωματίδιο.

Πυγ: Τότε πρέπει να μάθεις πράγματα για να σωματίδια που έχουν ήδη ανακαλυφθεί.

J: Για παράδειγμα;

Πυγ; Για παράδειγμα τα νετρίνα.

J: Τι είναι τα νετρίνα Πυγολαμπίδα;

Πυγ: Τα νετρίνα είναι μικρά σωματίδια με ελάχιστη μάζα, χωρίς ηλεκτρικό φορτίο, τα οποία περνάνε μέσα από την ύλη και κινούνται σχεδόν με την ταχύτητα του φωτός.

J: Αφού περνάνε μέσα από την ύλη, πώς τα εντοπίζουμε;

Πυγ: Τα νετρίνα είναι πολύ δύσκολο να αντιδράσουν με την ύλη, επειδή δεν έχουν φορτίο. Φαντάσου ότι αυτή τη στιγμή δισεκατομμύρια νετρίνα περνάνε μέσα απ΄ το σώμα σου. Για να τα εντοπίσουμε έχουμε φτιάξει μεγάλες μπάλες, τις οποίες βάζουμε σε πάγο ή πολύ καθαρό νερό.

J: Και πώς εντοπίζουν αυτές οι μπάλες τα νετρίνα;

Πυγ: Όταν τα νετρίνα αντιδρούν, ηλεκτρόνια που κινούνται πιο γρήγορα από το φως στο νερό, εκπέμπουν ένα μπλε φως, που λέγεται ακτινοβολία Cherenkov.

J: Ουάου!!!

The Future

CREATIONS hosts a significant number of communities related to the concept of Global Science Opera which can be visited when you click on the "Network of Related Communities". Stage performances of students giving life to scientific notions and exploiting sonification features form the future of embodied learning. Sonification of data streams from CERN or from earthquake sensors combined with visualization software help students expand their own perspectives towards a scientific concept by understanding the similarities between knowledge, action, sound and vision.

The future of Global Science Opera in real time welcomes the idea of sonyfying universal concepts such as planetary movements of our solar system or beyond. By exploiting proportions and frequencies of data rows coming from this field, teachers can experiment in the use of advanced sonification software such as IanniX or employ 3D virtual musical instrument building environments such as the iMuSciCA project.
